Plastics. The History of Rotational Molding Processes: From the First Dosing Machines to the Technological Revolution

Why design dosing systems?

“Thanks to this system we facilitated machine feeding by making machines more automatic. It used to be much more complex: now it is nothing but a simple and quick job”.

How did you succeed in designing these systems?

“Thanks to my technical diploma in industrial engineering and to the experience I gained working with plastics machines and systems, as a designer (I designed these systems while working for Caccia mechanical workshops in Samarate) I managed to identify the needs and issues at stake and found the technical way to satisfy and resolve them, thanks to years of experience in designing extrusion and dosing machines for granules and injection molding presses”.

What has changed since?

“In the following years many customers installed these machines and new sizes were implemented, leading to dosing materials in small molds up to large tanks”.

How has designing dosing systems changed since then?

“In recent years, dosing has developed enormously in terms of electronics, digital level and information technology. I witnessed and explored this growth – and continue doing so – through Eurotec Impianti. On a structural and mechanical level, instead, no substantial progress has been made, since industrial mechanics could not keep up with electronics.

While the first dosing systems could only sense the weight of the load, our machines were subsequently equipped with softwares for managing production, developed in cooperation with leading companies in the sector. When the order arrives, the machine operators identify and upload the product’s code; the machine automatically uploads the programmed sequence associated with the material’s formulation and proceeds with its mixing, dosing, conveying and injection in the mold.

During these years, we also developed information systems capable of codifying materials and forwarding their codes directly to the company warehouse. We started from a dosing issue and ended up innovating the whole rotational molding sector with a comprehensive, functional software for material management.

Over these years I also designed individual dosing systems for smaller weights on board of the machine. In these machines, the material to be dosed is directly bagged or placed in small buckets ready to be dosed by the operator.
